Smarty Pants offers one-on-one tutoring in a wide variety of subjects, including reading, writing, math, and English. We realize how important a child's overall comfort level is to the experience, and we strive to make overcoming a challenge something that is fun and rewarding.
ERB Preparation
The Early Childhood Admissions Assessment (ECAA) offers a uniform testing program more commonly referred to as the ERB. This test is officially know as the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, 3rd edition. ERBs are required for admission to most independent schools is New York City. The test is scored on a developmental scale and standardized using a national population where each child is compared to a child his or her age within a three month age bracket. By focusing on both the performance and verbal sections of the test and by recognizing the significance of a child's own unique comfort level with the test, Smarty Pants boasts an exceptional track record with ERB prep.
OLSAT Preparation
The Department of Education utilizes the Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) for gifted program assessment as a basis for providing a look into each child's intellectual abilities. The OLSAT is designed to measure verbal, quantitative, and reasoning skills that are aligned with school achievement. Smarty Pants works on such tasks as similarities, vocabulary recall, defining words, following directions, establishing sequences, classifiying objects, and completing analogies. Regents Exam and NY State ELA and Math Exam Preparation
The New York Department of Education sets high performance standards for New York public schools when comes to the preparation for these exams. Tests that students have to pass each year to meet the promotion criteria are the ELA test (English Language Arts) and math tests and the Regents Exams. The ELA test is designed to test students’ reading, listening, and writing skills. The goal of the math assessment is to gauge students’ knowledge on various math topics relevant to their respective grade levels. Smarty Pants offers an outstanding track record in test preparation for these exams and for high school math and English Regents Exams.
College and High School Research Papers, English Papers, Admissions Essays, and Personal Statements
These one hour lessons focus on skill building and overall writing ability to help students write compelling and effective essays. Assessment of writing will be made using the six traits of effective writing -- ideas and content, conventions, word choice, organization, voice, and sentence fuildity. Analysis of writing is discussed using a six point rubric scale.
